28.10.2017 Argostoli

Samedi 28 octobre 2017

Gray and calm. We slept very well, the fear of the motor stopping yesterday made us very tired. The French lady on the catamaran comes to ask us if we can help them rotate their boat, put it like us, the nose to the north. They rotate it with the engine and our job, Jens and me, is just to catch their moorings lines. And even for this small maneuver, he is shouting at her, not nice. We walk along the dock, well paved, and see a sea turtle. Police officers empty the street along the sea and when we go for a walk in the city, we don’t see anyone, everything is closed. I ask a policewoman why and she answers that it is a holiday, "The day of No". On October 28, 1940, the Greek prime minister said no to surrender to the Italians and it is this event that is celebrated today. It rains in the morning but the rain stops at 11:45, everyone hopes that it will not rain for the parade at noon, but, unlucky, when the parade begins, it starts to rain, and strongly. School children are drenched, the poor kids. The spectators have umbrellas, but not the children. The parade lasts half an hour then it's over, everything becomes normal again ... the rain stops and the sun appears. We eat lunch at the boat, rest and then walk, first along the sea to the north. We recognize a small beach where we bathed in June 2015, then we climb the sloping streets to the west and arrive on the other side of the peninsula. We are looking for another beach, Lassi, but don’t find it and come back by shortcuts. The wind has risen from the north, and a small chop in the harbor makes Hera II dance a little. In the late evening, a mega-yacht, Nikata, arrives. We are going to dinner at a taverna that looks nice, a little further on the dock. And we are not disappointed, we choose what we want in large dishes, it's good and we have a dessert (raw apple, honey and cinnamon, with halva) offered by the house. A wall is decorated with old photos of Argostoli. We comment on the picture of the causeway built by the English at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 2015, it was in poor condition and closed, but the restaurant's owner tells us that now it is passable.
