26.10.2017 Ay Andreas. Ithaca

Jeudi 26 octobre 2017

Very beautiful weather and less windy than yesterday. We take a walk in Vathi before leaving. The city, like all of Ithaca, suffered a lot during an earthquake in 1953 and most of the houses are new, but there are still old walls, old stairs and some old houses. We go shopping at a supermarket and then leave at 11:15 am. It's much quieter than yesterday and we're driving south. We are thinking of going to a bay south of Athica, Ay Andreas. Quiet and relaxed crossing, then we arrive at this bay, and the only boat is a zodiac that leaves when we arrive. We anchor but it takes a lot of chain, it's deep. The anchor holds but the little wind directs the bow out to sea, but it's so calm that it's okay. Five minutes later, a catamaran arrives and goes very close to the white pebble beach and a few minutes after the "Constantina" which was at the same dock as us in Vathi, but she doesn’t stay long.  Jens goes to check something in the engine and just at the same time a hot water pipe breaks behind the engine. Jens is really at the right place at the right time. He can close the water supply and we don't loose too much water. Bathing, lunch and Jens makes the throne, now I sit well in the dinghy. We go to land and walk to two houses in ruins. To think that people lived here ... I'm looking for flowers, but it's dry, stony and don’t think I will find some, but yes, small pink crocuses. When we come back to the beach, the catamaran is leaving and we have this beautiful bay just for us. Jens looks again at the weather forecast, it will be calm tonight, the light wind will turn north, which is good for us since the bay is protected from the north and open to the south. He wants to put a rope to land but I don’t agree, I think the best is to have only the anchor and let the boat rotate in the wind. He does it anyway. Blog, dinner of a spinach pie bought in Vathi and quiet evening. Jens has put on the anchor watch, this system with a GPS that monitors that we don’t move too far from the anchor and he looks at it before going to bed. It shows that we are about ten meters from the coast on the side of the bay (luckily it’s deep), the wind is from the north but the boat can’t rotate because of the rope. It is very dark and we don’t want to do maneuvers in the dark, so Jens lengthens the rope, and Hera II can rotate and turn her bow to the north. Rest of the night without problem.
